What Temporary Car Insurance Normally Includes Short term insurance policy coverage depends on the type of policy. Comprehensive cover insures drivers for loss of or damage to their vehicle in the case of accident, fire, theft, or attempted theft. If the vehicle is damaged and it's covered by the policy, the insurer will pay for the vehicle to be moved to the nearest repairer and repaired. It may also pay to have the car returned to the driver's residence after the repair is complete. Third party only, however, solely pays for damage to a third party's vehicle, person, or property. What it Covers When a driver makes a claim, the insurer can either repair or replace the damaged parts or can pay the owner a cash amount. Policies pay up to the market value of the vehicle at the time of loss or damage, but won't pay more than the insured amount – usually around £40,000 to £50,000. Insurers may pay for loss of a vehicle's standard audio equipment, up to a certain amount – usually around £500. Some policies also cover personal belongings if they're listed with the insurer. This may also be an optional extra that drivers can purchase. Liability Policies cover the driver's legal liability for death or injury due to the driver's operation of the vehicle, another insured driver's operation of the vehicle provided they had the driver's permission, and passengers riding in the vehicle with the driver's permission. Policies also often cover legal expenses. Third party liability for property damage may be capped at a certain amount, possibly £5,000,000. Foreign Travel Policies may also cover driving in the European Union if the cover meets the legal minimums in the EU. Some insurers may require proof that the vehicle is taxed and housed in the United Kingdom. Others require an additional premium for European coverage.
